We’ve all heard the saying, “accidents happen,” but planning ahead can help your family feel prepared in the case of unexpected injury. Accident insurance, also known as supplemental accident insurance or personal accident insurance, can help with those unanticipated medical costs that come with an accidental injury.
Accidents do happen, but they don’t have to drain your finances. UnitedHealthcare offers a variety of accident insurance plans,1 underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, to help pay for the costs of care following injuries.
Accident ExpenseGuard, Accident ProGuard and Accident ProGap all offer benefits paid in a lump sum directly to you for eligible expenses related to accidental injury. These benefits are paid regardless of other insurance coverage you have, up to your chosen annual maximum. Also, each plan covers different situations, offering you flexibility in choosing the type coverage you need.
Accident SafeGuard pays a fixed amount for loss resulting from qualifying accidental injuries. In other words, with Accident SafeGuard you receive a fixed amount based on the services received.
Accident SafeGuard offers three plan levels with varying benefit amounts based on the type of accident incurred.
Accident SafeGuard plans also include:

These products provide limited benefits, are not major medical or comprehensive health insurance and do not provide the mandated coverage necessary to avoid a penalty under the Affordable Care Act. This coverage provides benefits for losses resulting from accidental bodily injury.
Consider an accident insurance policy to help offset the deductible of your medical insurance plan. Accident insurance can be purchased standalone or combined with other health insurance plans to create well-rounded coverage. Short term medical, dental, vision, and critical illness plans can be great complements to accident insurance.
1 THESE PRODUCTS PROVIDE LIMITED BENEFITS. THESE ARE SUPPLEMENTS TO HEALTH INSURANCE AND ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE REQUIRED BY THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (ACA). LACK OF MAJOR MEDICAL COVERAGE (OR OTHER MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE) MAY RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PAYMENT WITH YOUR TAXES. These products provide benefits in a stated amount regardless of the actual expenses incurred.
